Digimon/Vættir, Digimon, or as they call themselves the Vættir, hatch from eggs called Digitama. They age via a process called "shinka" or "evolution" which changes their appearance and increases their physical powers. Some Digimon act feral, like wild animals. Most, however, possess human intelligence, speech, and personality traits.
Digimon have a life cycle: they age in a similar fashion to real living organisms, but do not die under normal circumstances because they are made of reconfigurable data. Old Digimon and Digimon who receive fatal wounds dissolve into infinitesimal bits of data. The data then recomposes itself as a Digitama and the Digimon goes through its life cycle again. Digimon who are reincarnated in this way will sometimes retain some or all their memories of their previous lifespan. However, if a Digimon's data is "downloaded," in which all the data of a dying Digimon is absorbed by another, or if the data is completely deleted or destroyed, they will permanently die.
In special cases, some Digimon do not get reincarnated despite their data still existing, for example, if a Digimon is killed in the Human World (ie. Midgard) their data will stay in the Human World, so their data will not be reconfigured. This is because when a digimon enters a Human World (ie. Midgard) then they will into a biological being for as long as their human partner is alive. As soon as their partner dies, they struggle between staying as they are and returning to their digital state.

Digital Evolution, A digimon's evolution is a process used by Digimon to develop into a more powerful being. This process is called "shinka" which translates to "evolution." During a Digimon's evolution the Digimon's appearance and attributes change, and they becomes significantly stronger than it was before. The result form of the Digimon almost always has a different name than the previous. However, the Digimon's consciousness remains unchanged, assuming that the digivolved under normal circumstances. If a Digimon does not absorb enough data needed to maintain the form, it will not be able to retain that form for long and revert to a lower level in a matter of time. Evolution is divided into multiple levels, made up of an egg-form Digitama and six main evolutionary steps.
Main Digivolutionary Stages: Baby I ↔ Baby II ↔ Child ↔ Adult ↔ Perfect ↔ Ultimate
If left to its own devices, Digimon will naturally age and, over time, may evolve to higher levels using data from the environment. Evolving from the initial Fresh stage usually progresses, but each subsequent level takes progressively more time. Because of this, only a sparse number of Digimon naturally reach their final forms. Anger and/or the necessity to survive in a great battle can often spur a Digimon's evolution.

Chosen Children, A chosen child is defined by the ability, the potential to reach ultimate level. When a digimon is partnered to their specific child, that child becomes it's sole source of digivolution. Digimon can digivolve on their own, but it is much too difficult for a digimon to accomplish on their own. Through a digivice, a digimon's power is amplified and with the addition of their human partner's energy, it is able to digivolve with ease.
Chosen children govern by specific attributes that affect the way their digimon digivolves. Their digimon partner are much stronger when affected by this type of emotional energy than any other type. They are called "chosen" because it is said that Yggdrasil has chosen them and gifted them with the ability to digivolve to Ultimate.
If they are killed, they are simply replaced. Their digimon partner grows feral and they attack just about anything. If their chosen item and/or digimon are destroyed, some of their power of that chosen child go to the person who killed them. This would enable their digimon to become a stronger version of their Perfect Level, not enable them to digivolve to Ultimate. (Please note that I'm using japanese digivolution lines here. x3; There are rumors among digimon of Asgard that if they (a human) receives this power on Asgard, they gain more than just a further digivolution.
Chosen children have different "auras" than regular humans. Theirs are much more stronger and have the ability to thicken it enough to make it visible. Each chosen child has their own special colored flame - like aura. This aura often interferes with electronic devices used to to detect people, for example, x-rays or infrared vision.
Most importantly, chosen children might not even be children at all. All Aettiers (digmon and human pairs) may have Yggdrasil's blessing as long as there are five in total in each of the two "Human" worlds.

D-BOND, When their chosen items are in their card form they are a type of Digivice called "D-Bond." They serve to channel the emotional energy of a human, allowing their Digimon partners to evolve. They are about the size of a normal playing card. Their backings have changed from their partner Digimon to their chosen attribute.
In addition to permitting evolution, the Digivices have some other abilities. They can project beams of light that have debilitating effects on "evil" Digimon and those under the control of any dark force and have it forced from their body, while those who are simply unpleasant in nature will be turned to goodness. These beams can restrain Digimon, and, on one occasion, combined to create a force-field that contained a massive explosion. On a more simple level, they have built-in clocks, and are able to track the signal emitted by other Digivices. To travel into the Digital World, one must possess a Digivice.
The D-Bond can analyze nearly every Digimon that the partnered Digimon sees. It also has a Compass/Radar function which can detect when an aggressive Digimon is nearby, and can display what the chosen child's Digimon is seeing. The D-Bond can also heal the chosen child's digimon, especially when they are on the verge of dying. (Please note that it is unreliable to depend on this ability because it heals the digimon just enough to stabilize their data. They will need to be healed further before they are able to actually fight again. More than likely a chosen digimon reverts back to a digitama at this point.) If needed, the D-Bond digivice contains a data strip on the back side of the D-Bond where their attribute is found.
The data strip of a D-Bond is similar to a thumb print, they are unique to each individual. In Midgard, they serve a double purpose, since they have been able to use a D-Bond similar to a ID card or even as a key to open one's house.
